What it is
The Establishment Card (also called Immigration Card) is the document that links a UAE-licensed entity to the federal immigration system, enabling it to sponsor and renew employee and investor visas. It is issued by GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in other emirates after the Trade License is in place. Without it, the entity cannot pull Entry Permits, issue Employment Visas, or process visa cancellations.
Issuance fee is a one-off cost (typically AED 2,000–3,500) paid at the first visa application. The card carries a unique establishment number used in every immigration filing.

How it works
- The company obtains or renews its trade licence and secures office space, as both are typically verified during Establishment Card application.
- The authorised signatory or PRO submits the application through the GDRFA e-system (Dubai) or ICP portal (other emirates), attaching trade licence, establishment contract or lease, and signatory identification.
- Immigration authorities verify the entity's legal status, office existence, and signatory authority before issuing the Establishment Card with a unique file number.
- Once active, the company can initiate work permit requests, entry permits applications, and residence visa sponsorships through this file.
- The Establishment Card must be renewed before expiry; failure to do so suspends all sponsorship capabilities until renewal is completed.

A Dubai mainland LLC with a valid trade licence applies for its Establishment Card through GDRFA after signing its office lease in Business Bay. The card is issued within two working days, enabling the company to sponsor five software engineers on employment visas. A free zone company in DMCC renews its Establishment Card annually alongside its trade licence renewal, ensuring uninterrupted sponsorship of its general manager's family members. An Abu Dhabi branch office obtains its Establishment Card through ICP rather than GDRFA, reflecting the emirate-level division of immigration authority in the UAE.
Why it matters
An entity that doesn't plan to sponsor visas can skip the Establishment Card; one that does must obtain it first. It is the gateway document for the entire visa stack.
