Freelance Permit

A Freelance Permit is a UAE self-employment authorisation for individuals working independently — consultants, designers, marketers, IT professionals, writers, content creators. Multiple free zones run dedicated freelancer programs: TECOM Group (DMC, DIC, DKP), DTec, twofour54, RAKEZ, IFZA, Meydan, and Ajman Free Zone. The permit comes with a 1–3 year residency visa, an Establishment Card, and the right to invoice in the freelancer's own name.

More restrictive than a full Professional License — single-person, narrow activity scope, lower visa quota (often just self).

The application process for a Freelance Permit typically involves the following steps:

1. Eligibility Assessment: Determine if you meet the eligibility criteria, which generally include a valid offer of work or a proven track record of freelance work.
2. Document Submission: Gather the required documents, including passport, employment contract (if applicable), proof of funds, and other supporting documents as specified by the relevant authority.
3. Application Submission: Submit the application form and supporting documents to the relevant immigration authority, usually the GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) in Dubai or the relevant authority in other emirates.
4. Medical Examination: Undergo a medical examination to ensure you meet the health requirements.
5. Visa Issuance: Upon approval, the Freelance Permit will be issued, allowing you to reside and work in the UAE.

Several free zones in the UAE offer dedicated freelancer visa programs. For example, the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) have specific programs catering to freelancers in various fields. Many individuals from countries like the USA, UK, and India utilize these programs to establish a business and work remotely in the UAE. The process often involves demonstrating a strong business plan and financial stability to support your freelance activities.

Freelance Permits are the cheapest legal route to UAE residency for solo knowledge workers — meaningfully cheaper than a Professional License LLC for the same activity scope.
